EVERLY
Meâs so happy, my wolf said. Run. Run fast and far again!
Not too far. I took a backseat as she loped into the woods, her tongue lolling, and her body suffused with joy.
When I let her free, something primeval and perfect bloomed inside me, a long-dead blossom suddenly hit with soft, sweet rain. I swore energy poured through me, refilling my depleted well. I needed it after another week watching Olivia cling to Asher.
What happened in the woods? Sometimes, it felt like a dream.
Need talk? my wolf asked.
Need run. My chatter only held her back. Itâs time for you to feel the wind in your fur and the soft leaves beneath your paws again. She didnât need me steering her, controlling her. I was in charge too often as it was.
Sometimes, it was nice to let someone else make a few decisions.
Loves run, she said simply. Complete.
Yeah.
She trotted along a narrow deer trail, the creatureâs musky scent lingering in the air. The deer hadnât been here since last night, when it crept from the woods to graze on the mowed lawn, but my wolf could pick up a scent like this for days.
Her snout rustled among the leaves. Good. Smell good!
Have at it, babe, I said.
I closed my eyes and drifted, giving her free rein. The Chancellor would have a fit if she knew I loosened my wolf on campus outside of restricted days, let alone that I entered the woods, but I didnât give a shit. It was Friday. Party time.
Iâd never played by the rules and today wasnât the day Iâd start.
My wolf shuffled along the trail before leaving it to bound through a raspberry thicket. Her thick, white coat was impervious to thorns.
A mouse, startled by her passage, sprang away with a squeak.
Mouse, mouse. She gave chase with the thunder of a thousand shifters roaring through her veins. Catch, catch, catch! she cried, her paws stomping the ground behind the creature. Head straining forward, she was drunk in the scent.
Nah, let it go. Donât kill it.
Wants catch, she whined, her pace slowing. Eats.
I grimaced. Please, no.
Iâd let her forage before; something vital to a wild beast, but the thought of her flicking it up into the air then chomping it when it looped back down made my belly churn.
The mouse darted into a hollow log, and my wolf stomped around the end, nosing at the sides, hoping to shake the little thing free. Silence suggested it had either slunk out the other end and or it crouched in the middle, hiding. It wouldnât come out until after we were gone.
Run some more, I said. Oh, look, a butterfly!
Wheres? Her head snapped up, and she peered around. Wheres?!
To your right, among those pink flowers thatâ¦
As if the shadow of a predator passed between us and the moon, bringing dank darkness with it, terror crept down my spine.
Somethingâs⦠I shook my head, unable to place what it might be, but knowing I should do anything I could to avoid it.
